BOB JOHNSON R-I-P

Sad news – Preston singer Bob Johnson passed away on Saturday 7th May, Bob had been ill for some time with a cancer.  Bob’s last gig with The Bobcats  was at a packed Chipping Village hall – Sunday March 27th, along with his long-time friend Phil Cool; and reports are -  that as usual Bob really ‘nailed the gig’, but then he always did.

Also sad to report, only informed today; that Hoghton [Nr Preston] guitarist Eddie Pearson, who at one time was a member of Bob Johnson’s Bobcats, [who I worked with in some bands in the very early 1960’s]; had passed away sometime ago during heart surgery, what a nice guy and a great musician he was.

Our thoughts are with the bereaved families, friends and musical associates of Bob and Eddie.

I guess there will be many tributes to Bob on various Web sites in the coming days and weeks, including the site of Desi O’ Reilly  [now resident in Australia] a superb ex-drummer/vocalist of the Bobcats and the latterly The Puppets.

Fifty years on.. Bob Johnson & The Bobcats at their final gig.

Dave ‘Ginner’ Millen: Lead Guitar. Franny Coupe: Rhythm Guitar.

Keith Dalton: Bass Guitar. Desi O’ Reilly: Drums.

"This combo was highly regarded in Preston and District. The final edition of The Bobcats prior to morphing into The Puppets was: Dave 'Ginner' Millen: Lead Guitar - Vocal. Jim Whittle: Bass Guitar - Backing vocal. Desi O’ Reilly: Drums - Vocal."

Robb Shenton: December 2011

"Playing many times as resident band for me at The Catacombs Club in Preston, Bob and the boys helped me, the club owner, to establish the former flooded cellars and stabling's into a thriving 1960's rhythm & blues venue. Many famous artistes played at the Cat including Rory Storm & The Hurricanes with Ringo Starr on drums. The Big Three opened the first night with Screamin'Lord Sutch & The Savages on the same bill. Later came Ricky Vallens, Freddie Starr and Keith Hartley of the Keith Hartley Blues Band. Elton John played in his in early days and so did Eric Clapton. I eventually opened five clubs in the north of England.

Bob Johnson however is still a very popular singer. Together with two of the original band, Keith Dalton the guitarist, recently visited my Catforth home to invite my Brazilian wife Jacyara and I to their very last show at the Ship Inn on the docks.

Keith Dalton: Guitarist with The Bobcats with Clive Kelly.

The Bob Johnson show was absolutely awesomely fantastic. He went on for hours; each song better than the last. Even though Bob is over 70, his sound is as fresh as a daisy. Bullfrog - the much requested old story of a frog's wisdom from the poem-song really knocked out the one hundred strong audience of fans.

Clive Kelly: March 2011

"Must be 1959. I was taking care of the cloak room at the Cats, my brother Paddy was on the door. It's the first photo of The Catacombs Club I've ever seen."
