THE ALAN AXON COMBO
Alan Axon: Keyboards. Phil Mitchell: Drums. Bob Mason: Vocal - Compare.
Joe Carroll: Saxaphone.
The sixties were a distant memory and then along came 'cabaret' - workingmens club style. As a forerunner The Dixieland Bar in Southport was a thriving mecca of regional entertainment featuring amongst others The Rocking Berry's, The Black Abotts and The Grumbleweeds with their high emphasis on belly-laugh comedy shows.
The combo was a talented mix support musicians playing anything from rock 'n roll to ballroom and strictly old-tyme dancing - with no ambitious claims to becoming worldwide superstars. Jobbing musicians working in local residencies proliferated and lasted well into the new millenium, from where they went into steep decline, being replaced by pre-recorded backing tracks, This enabled the venues to pay their visiting artistes without the need to pay for resident backing musicians.
